From Our Scholars

Orhun Akengin – Stanford
Last year I was accepted to Stanford as a computer science major as the only international transfer student. My transfer from Ozyegin University to Stanford was made possible through a small but life-changing amount of funding. Now this fundraiser will change other students’ lives through BTF’s Research Fund.
Two years ago, I experienced firsthand how financial barriers can limit a student’s potential. After landing a research internship at Stanford, I faced the tough reality of covering the financial aspect of my visit. Turkey’s economic crisis combined with increasing inflation in the Bay Area, made it nearly impossible for me to cover my expenses. The generous funding I received back then enabled me to attend the world’s leading conferences in my field of study, including the NeurlPS AI conference, where I published two papers as a sophomore. My participation in these conferences led to my acceptance to Stanford as a transfer student.
Now, it’s my turn to pay it forward. That’s why I helped start this fundraiser to help other underprivileged students reach their full potential. Together with the Bridge to Türkiye Fund (BTF), we launched the Research Fund to support students who have the talent and ambition to succeed but lack the financial resources to take that next step. With your help, we can make a difference in their lives too! Be part of this mission to break financial barriers for students with big dreams. Every contribution makes a difference!
